Pop Culture

Agent and I had the most awesome party last night. It was a drink and ping party, with much laughter, drunken ping pong, and lively conversation. Our very talented friend took amazing pictures that captured the spectacular moments with great clarity.

Pancakes

Mmmm…yum.

We’ll have gluten free pancakes this evening because pancakes are delicious. Even though the pancake mix is made with no gluten, they taste just as good as gluten-filled pancakes. (Except they have a horrible after-taste and they’re very grainy.) Ha ha ha ha ha ha! (I was just going to say that we don’t have syrup, which would be a huge bummer, when suddenly, our roommate called and will be picking some up on the way home.)

The Anti Guitar Hero

Anti Guitar Hero

I know it’s nearly impossible to believe, but there are people on this earth who are not beholden to the pure excellence that is Guitar Hero. There are a select few who turn up their nose and show obvious resentment toward the best video game I’ve ever played in my entire life. I feel so bad for them that they cannot break through their assumptions and have a little fun in their lives.

Guitar Hero strikes a dissonant chord for some. “If I wanted to practice something,” they say, “I would play a real instrument.” Well, I don’t see them playing anything, which if fine with me. I’ll gladly take their turn, ’cause I need to rock out.

I think the Anti Guitar Hero really believes, way down deep inside, that Guitar Hero is bastardizing* the sacred art form which is Rock and Roll music. I say the more Rock and Roll we have in our lives, the better people we are. So there.

* I can say “bastardizing” because I am one.

Les Schtroumpfs

There are so many things about the Smurfs I never knew I did not know. For example:

  • The Smurfs first appeared in a Belgian comic strip in 1958.
  • French for “smurf”, “Schtroumpf” is an invented word.
  • The Smurf village is divided between North & South, and the Smurfs on either side have different ideas as to whether the term “smurf” should be used as a verb or as a noun.
  • The first animated film featuring the Smurfs was released in Belgium in 1965.
  • The Smurfs have starred in at least three full length films: The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, The Baby Smurf, and Here are the Smurfs.
  • The Smurfs, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, ran on NBC from 1981 to 1989.
  • The series currently airs in reruns on Boomerang.
  • There are tentative plans to start releasing the complete Smurfs cartoon series on DVD in season box sets in 2008.
  • Don Messick is the voice of Papa Smurf and Scooby Doo.
  • Smurf figurines are wildly popular, especially in Belgium and Germany: only in two years since 1969 (1991 and 1998) have no new smurfs entered the market.
  • “Smurf” is a term to describe a hooded jacket or hooded sweat shirt.
  • They’re making a movie. Sometime in 2008, we’ll see the Smurfs again on the big screen.

It’s Official

Kurt Cobain has become Just Another Free Ringtone. Couldn’t they at least come up with a more challenging lyric to finish?
